STAY COOL: Thermofluids for E-Mobility and Data Centers

Charging times of just ten minutes? This could soon become a reality for electric vehicles. It is all made possible by immersion cooling, in which technical components are fully submerged in FUCHS thermofields. The process can also be used for heat management at data centers.

Lubricants not only ensure smooth running – they can also provide cooling. FUCHS is using this characteristic to future-proof its products in new business areas. The aim is for novel fluids to control the temperature of electric vehicle drive systems, as well as to cool equipment at large data centers. The company employs a new process here, in which complete modules are submerged in cooling fluids.

New design for automotive lubricants: better orientation, better handling, gentler use of resources

The FUCHS Group, which operates globally in the lubricants industry, brings new small packs for the automotive sector onto the market, maximizing customer benefits: new labels for better orientation, ergonomic design for better handling, and gentle on resources thanks to the use of recycled material. The new small packs will be implemented gradually in the FUCHS companies from November 15, 2021.

The range of lubricant products in the automotive sector is enormous – and for customersit's getting harder and harder to find what they need. The new small packs for all automotive FUCHS product brands – TITAN, AGRIFARM, MAINTAIN, PLANTO, and SILKOLENE – rise to this challenge: The Group has optimized its small packs globally for the quantities 1, 4, and 5 liters, not just visually but also in terms of handling and environmental friendliness. "The unique new design makes it easier for our customers to choose the right product, improves user-friendliness, and saves on resources," sums up Krisztián Rada, Head of Automotive Aftermarket Division.

Easy to choose
The new clearly structured design of the labels enables customers to identify all the relevant information at a glance. Colors, images, and pictograms help with orientation. For instance, the quality levels of the products are clearly indicated by the color codes gold, silver, and bronze. The most important information the customer needs to know about the lubricant is given in concise and comprehensible way, such as the viscosity of the product and area of application – for cars, trucks, or tractors.

Easy to use
The new ergonomically shaped bottles are easy to open without tools, fit better in the hand, and are easier for the user to handle. For example, the enlarged opening of the bottle and an optimized neck design allow accurate filling with no drops. Two handles make the 4 and 5-liter bottles more comfortable to carry and facilitate filling. What's more, the new tamper-resistant cap ensures that the bottle has not been opened before and that if FUCHS is written on it, there is FUCHS inside it.

Easy on the environment
FUCHS has been pursuing its sustainability strategy for almost ten years now, with the objective of carbon neutrality* according to the "avoid – reduce – compensate" principle. As such, all FUCHS lubricants in the Group's plants are produced carbon-neutrally*. The bottle material of the new small packs consists of up to 30 percent recycled material (PCR) and is 100-percent recyclable. The improved bottle shape of the bottle also makes it possible to pour out even the smallest remaining volume of fluid, allowing complete emptying of the bottles. "Our new small packs are not just intended to be more user-friendly but also contribute to avoiding waste, enable materials to be recycled, and help to reduce carbon footprints. FUCHS will continue to work toward making our packaging continuously more sustainable in the future, too," says Markus Garb, Vice President Sustainability, stating a further objective of the innovation.

Introduction of new ACEA oil sequences

When was the introduction of the new 2021 version?

Since 01.05.2021 engine oil manufacturers can label products according to the new ACEA sequences. There is a transitional period of two years for engine oils according to ACEA 2016. From 01.05.2023, only the new 2021 version will be valid.

What has changed?

  • For the first time, the categories for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (Ax/Bx and Cx) have been revised independently from those for heavy commercial vehicles (Ex). This allows changes in the market and new hardware requirements to be reflected more quickly and directly in the sequences.
  • With the introduction of ACEA 2021, several new tests have also been added: new wear tests (Sequence IVB and Sequence X), a fuel economy test (JASO FE M366), a turbocharger test (CEC L-114-19) and an LSPI test (Sequence IX).
  • The A3/B3 and C1 categories will not be continued so that the requirements of the current vehicle fleet can be focused even more.
  • Introduction of two new categories to meet the growing demands, especially with regard to Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI), wear protection and turbocharger cleanliness:

ACEA A7/B7 - High-SAPS engine oil for vehicles without particle filter
ACEA C6 - Low-SAPS engine oil for vehicles with particle filter

And at FUCHS?

FUCHS will continue to qualify the products according to the new ACEA 2021 requirements, so that we can offer correctly labeled and qualified lubricants to our customers. The engine oil TITAN GT1 FLEX 5 SAE 0W-20 is already qualified according to the new requirements of ACEA C5 and ACEA C6.

Making the impossible happen - FUCHS SCHMIERSTOFFE develops a PU-based special lubricating grease for passenger car constant velocity joint (CVJ) side shafts

The developers at FUCHS SCHMIERSTOFFE GMBH have succeeded in developing a new, special lubricating grease RENOLIT PU-LFT 1 (polyurea, low friction tripod) for constant velocity joints of passenger cars. Extremely low coefficients of friction in a steel to steel contact and a sufficient endurance/ durability of the grease in the joint, are the main characteristics of RENOLIT PU-LFT 1, which are usually difficult to combine.

RENOLIT PU-LFT 1 was developed within a very short time for the drive shaft specialist Neapco to improve the performance of inboard plunging joints, mainly standard tripods. The new FUCHS grease very reliably reduces the so-called ‘clonk noise’ that occurs in some vehicles when shifting up from the first to the second gear. For that reason, a well-known OEM asked Neapco to have a grease developed, that meets all NVH- (noise, vibration, harshness) criteria and at the same time offers a high efficiency performance and lifetime.

Hence, the grease must reduce the 3rd order axial (sliding) forces and the so-called shudder effect. RENOLIT PU-LFT 1 meets all these requirements and also shows an extremely low coefficient of friction in the tripod roller/ tulip track contact, which leads to a significant improvement in efficiency and energy savings of the vehicle. RENOLIT PU-LFT 1 is meanwhile being used in a large-series passenger car model. In addition, the new PU special lubricating grease will be used as a troubleshooter, whenever conventional greases are not sufficient.

RENOLIT PU-LFT 1 is the first Neapco approved product to be manufactured at the new PU production plant in Kaiserslautern. Further low-friction solutions for fixed joints will follow shortly, in close cooperation with other FUCHS R&D units.

New Double Clutch Transmission Fluid specially developed for use in the Mercedes-Benz-8-speed-Double-Clutch-Transmissions

With the introduction of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, Mercedes-Benz has set new standards in terms of driving dynamics and efficiency. The new transmission offers low shifting times, maximum comfort thanks to smooth gearshifts and high efficiency.

Thus, the topic of CO2 savings has meanwhile taken on an important position in the transmission sector as well. This is accompanied by a constant increase in efficiency, which is also realized by a suitable lubricant, for example, by a lowered viscosity. At the same time, wear protection and friction characteristics must not be neglected. In addition, the increasing requirements such as higher oxidation stability also play a key role. All these requirements were recorded by Mercedes-Benz in the specification MB 236.22.

Product Profile and Application
In cooperation with Mercedes-Benz, we have developed the new PENTOSIN FFL-10 based on our unique XTL® technology. Especially optimized for the requirements of this gearbox, it is currently approved exclusively according to the specification MB 236.22.

To meet these highest requirements, a sophisticated and innovative combination of state-of-the-art additive technology and base oil composition is required. This is the point where the unique performance of our XTL® technology can be demonstrated in comparison to conventional technologies.

Exceptional Fuel Economy

To meet the high demands for CO2 reduction, PENTOSIN FFL-10 is one of the thinnest double-clutch transmission fluids in the world. This allows enormous fuel savings.

Excellent Wear Protection

Despite the lowered viscosity, the XTL® technology offers excellent wear protection. In the most critical components, PENTOSIN FFL-10 achieves impressive results.

Outstanding Friction Properties

The impressive friction stability of PENTOSIN FFL-10 offers excellent clutch performance and optimum shifting comfort over the entire change interval.

ACEA 2016

Upgrade accomplished successfully

FUCHS has qualified all its products to ACEA 2016 and will have updated its product information as of December 2018. Therefore, you can be sure that our engine oils continue to provide excellent protection for your engine and meet the latest requirements. For products that were previously specified according to ACEA A1/B1, we now have this claim as a recommendation, as A1/B1 has been discontinued by ACEA.

What has changed?

  • New materials and the increasing number of modern direct-injection engines with turbocharges has required the inclusion of two new engine tests.
  • The share of alternative fuels such as biodiesel is becoming more and more important. Therefore, the compatibility with biofuels plays an ever-increasing role.
  • These new fuels as well as higher combustion temperatures can lead to more oxidation and thus oil thickening. The suitability of the engine oil is checked with two oxidation tests.
  • For supercharged engines, the cleanliness of the turbocharger is essential. The tendency of the engine oil to form deposits is judged in a corresponding engine test.
  • The industry-wide efforts to reduce fuel consumption and thus CO2 and other emissions also effect the engine oil. Especially for ACEA 2016 the ACEA C5 category was introduced, which addresses this issue.
  • New engines are using modern sealing materials. Engine oils must be compatible with these, which is determined in studies of elastomer compatibility.

(Mannheim, November 14, 2018)

The ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Européens d'Automobiles) is an association of the 15 most important car manufacturers in Europe. Among other things, it defines minimum requirements for engine oils in the so-called ACEA sequences. These are adjusted at certain intervals to meet the current demands of the European automotive industry. The last update from 01.12.2016 comes into force on 01.12.2018 for all product claims after a transitional period of two years.

TITAN Supersyn D1 SAE 0W-20

General Information
The American Petroleum Institute (API) has released an extension of the API SN specification: API SN PLUS. This enhancement has a special focus on a common problem in the gasoline engine sector: Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI). This premature ignition of the gasoline-air mixture in the combustion chamber occurs primarily in small, high-turbocharged gasoline engines at low speed. For the user, this is noticeable by loud "knocking" from the engine compartment and can lead to heavy damage. The additional test procedure Sequence IX in the API SN PLUS is intended to reduce the risk of LSPI. Like all previous API S * specifications, API SN PLUS is fully backward compatible with previous API S * categories.

Expansion of the TITAN Supersyn D1 range
To make the advantages of the TITAN Supersyn D1 technology available for an even wider range of applications, FUCHS has developed another product: TITAN Supersyn D1 SAE 0W-20. This product was added to the portfolio as a follow-up to TITAN SYN SN SAE 0W-20. TITAN SYN SN SAE 0W-20 will no longer be available in the foreseeable future. TITAN Supersyn D1 SAE 0W-20 is based on the technology of the SAE 5W-30 version and opens further possibilities and areas of application due to the added viscosity class.

  • Protection against LSPI. Proven by the API SN PLUS
  • Reduction of fuel consumption. Confirmed by the RC (Resource Conserving) version of the API SN PLUS
  • Approved according to dexos1™ Gen 2.

The relevance of the dexos1 ™ Gen 2 continues to increase in Europe. This specification is still being used by OPEL despite the acquisition of PSA. Whether there will be a change here and how it will be carried out is not known now. The API SN PLUS RC and ILSAC GF-5 specifications are relevant for different manufacturers, either as a base specification for their own specifications or directly as a specification for the application. This affects both Asian manufacturers such as Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, Lexus and Infiniti, as well as American manufacturers such as Ford and Chrysler. The trend towards low-viscosity engine oils is particularly pronounced among Asian manufacturers, which is why the TITAN Supersyn D1 SAE 0W-20 represents an ideal supplement for these manufacturers.
